All dressed up & nowhere to go…

My top tips for ‘dress’ing up every day…

You would be forgiven for thinking that I live a stylish life, flirting between parenting, in a myriad of delightful clothes.  But truth be told, I have a wardrobe full of dresses and nowhere to take them out.

My grab and go clothing of choice lately is jeans with a pretty blouse or leggings with a well-loved knitted jumper.  A typical week is surviving motherhood with an impossible to-do list of chores that come with raising little people.  I also have Mummy Style which keeps me busy but also keeps me primarily in comfortable clothes as I work from home.

In an ideal world, I would have a summer of soiree’s to attend, whimsical weddings, fanciful festivals and country living style picnics.  For these events, I would wear an array of floaty silhouettes, in romantic florals, with my children looking like characters in a Victorian novel.

Reality has no room for such daydreams, so let’s get real; how do I adapt my love of a dress into my every day Mum life?

Here are my top 5 tips:

1/ Remove the need for an occasion

Why do we need a special occasion to dress up? Surely every day should be an opportunity to feel our best.  Dresses have the ability to give you a Cinderella moment with the practicality that comes with one item dressing.  Therefore a winning combination surely for taking the stress out of deciding what to wear each morning, just insert shoes here.

2/ Dress it down

Dressing down is currently trending and therefore a look any Mum can get behind.  The days of towering in high heels and freezing in the name of fashion are over, glamour has taken a holiday.  In its place are leather jackets over midi dresses and trainers with maxi length jumpsuits.  Add a messy top knot and beaten denim jacket and you have nailed dress down day.

3/ Play with layering

Let’s be honest our Great British weather isn’t fond of us getting our legs out in the name of ‘best dressed’ therefore we have to be rather clever with layering.  Adding something simple as a Breton stripe top under a denim dress or layering a floaty dress over your favourite jeans is a great way of turning something weather appropriate.  It’s also an additional way to being able to wear something you love, whilst disguising the parts of our bodies we are not so fond of.

4/ Footwear as a game changer

As mentioned earlier the trend for sports footwear in the shape of white trainers is the new footwear du jour.  Those once casual kicks, that were exclusively saved for tracksuits and working out, have now taken over the dress category.  Have a real-life Carrie Bradshaw moment running across the road in your favourite dress with the comfortable knowledge that you’re not going to fall flat on your face.

5/ Life’s too short

What it all comes down to is… when will there ever be a time to wear our favourite clothes?  As I once put my life on hold because I no longer recognised the woman and body in the mirror, I’ve learnt that we should live in the moment.  Turn up to your own life always feeling amazing.

Finding an occasion to wear a dress should never be a struggle, deciding what dress to take the park, well that lies the conundrum.
